When widow Iris Kettlewell clapped eyes on bachelor David Mitchell, it was love at first sight.

So the 72-year-old didn't waste any time in getting to know the retired office clerk, who arrived at Castle Villas residential home in Skipton Road, Keighley, only eight months ago.

She got staff to introduce her to the 68-year-old because she was fascinated by him.

And it was the start of a whirlwind romance, which has been so swift that the pair, pictured, plan to marry on June 13.

But it was still up to Iris to take the initiative and pop the question, David admits.

He said: "It was Iris who proposed to me and I was very happy.

"I came here last October and it seems she took a fancy to me. She said certain things to me about getting married and I thought it was God's will that she liked me."

With that thought, David went off to buy an engagement ring.

Asked what attracted her to David, a smiling Iris said: "Well, he takes everything in his stride. I'm really looking forward to the wedding."

David and Iris, who has a daughter Valerie and two grandchildren living in Haworth, can't wait to for the ceremony at Keighley register office, which has been chosen because Iris is a Jehovah's Witness and David attends Keighley shared parish church.

And when she plights her troth she will be wearing a light blue gown, especially made by residential home owner Sophie Hussain, of Bradford.

Sophie said: "Iris is very excited. We were up until 11.30 the other night for a dress fitting. She looks really nice in it."

It is the first romance at the home which has led to marriage.

"We've had other sweethearts, but this is the first wedding. It's very exciting," said Sophie.

Staff are now busy decorating a special double room for the newlyweds, who plan to hold their wedding reception at the Three Sisters Hotel in Haworth.
