Bradford Bulls received a double boost last night. Not only did they show their resilience to defeat last season's Grand Final opponents Wigan Warriors 28-26 in an epic confrontation at Valley Parade with a Paul Deacon penalty in added time.

The Super League leaders also announced that winger Tevita Vaikona has signed a three-year extension to his contract that will keep them with the Bulls until the end of the 2005 season.

Head coach Brian Noble said: "Tevita has been one of the best wingers in the game over the last two years, and to have him for the next three is a huge boost for the club.

"I am delighted that Tevita has decided to remain with the club in the face of some very attractive offers from all over the world in both codes."

Vaikona said: "I am very happy that my future has been sorted out.

"I have had a fantastic four years at the club I believe is the best in the world, and I was delighted when the club wanted me to stay here for the foreseeable future."

The Tongan celebrated with a try as the Bulls clawed their way back from a 20-6 deficit, but the crowd for the live Sky TV match was a disappointing 13,314 - not even a season's best.

The Bulls scored 20 points in 21 minutes either side of half-time to lead

26-20, but Wigan looked like escaping with a point until Deacon's superb effort.

Noble revealed: "I said to Paul 'Kick it out of play and go for a drop goal', but he backed himself to go for goal. Even I get it wrong sometimes!"
