Bradford's Estonian community will be flying the flag for their homeland tonight at a special Eurovision Song Contest party.

The Estonia Club has received a £400 grant from Manningham and Girlington Regeneration Partnership for a big screen, food and entertainment.

The contest is being held in Tallinn, Estonia, and most of the country's population is expected to be watching the live event.

While Britain goes Boom-Bang-A-Bang for the UK's entry, Jessica Garlick, Bradford's Estonia Club will be cheering on 25-year-old Sahlene, (Anna Sahlin), singing Estonia's entry, Runaway,

Club member Paul Ratnik said the Eurovision had put Estonia on the map - and he hopes Bradford's Capital of Culture bid will highlight the city's Estonian population.

"People often aren't aware that that there are many Eastern European communities in Bradford, which have made great contributions to Bradford's industrial and cultural life. There has been a strong Estonian community here since the war," he said.

"I'm a big supporter of Bradford's Capital of Culture bid. It will bring in money for regeneration and restore pride in the district.

"And it's a great opportunity to highlight Bradford's different cultural communities.

"Estonia has a long tradition of singing and our club has always played an active part in Bradford's cultural events, with singing and folk dancing. Most of the members are older now, but we still have a ladies choir.

"The Eurovision is a positive way of promoting Estonia and for the older club members particularly, it's a chance to show pride in their homeland.

"And it's being held in Tallinn, where many of our families are based.

"Terry Wogan has made a few tongue-in-cheek comments about Estonia, but we're taking it in the spirit it's intended!"

Club members have been busy preparing for tonight's party. On the wall in the entrance hall is a colourful Eurovision poster, depicting people in traditional Estonian costume, alongside a picture of last year's winner, Estonian duo, 2XL.

"It is a very big celebration in Estonia - it's a small country and there is a lot of support for this event. We want to join in the celebrations, " said club treasurer Kalju Ellik, who managed to secure the grant for the celebrations.

Tonight's party will include traditional Estonian entertainment and food, including meat pies and Estonian pastries, and a raffle of Estonian vodka.
