A new service to support people who head up small businesses in Bradford has been set up by Business Link for West Yorkshire.

'Decision-maker' groups aim to give managing directors or chief executives who cannot call on directors for guidance the opportunity to discuss ideas and issues facing their organisations.

Chaired by an independent, experienced business person, the groups aim to provide a confidential environment which encourages discussion. And, because there are no two members from the same business sector, there is no conflict of interest.

The idea was developed by Business Link in collaboration with former Yorkshire and Humberside Development Association chief Executive, Peter Watson.

Groups involve 12 chief executives from across West Yorkshire and a range of issues, including planning, management structures, develop-ment and targeting new markets, have already been discussed.

Membership is open to any chief executive in West Yorkshire who is running an organisation and feels the need to share ideas and challenges with others who can understand the situation.

As well as meeting ten times a year each member has a visit from the chair between meetings to follow up issues and consider future discussion topics. Peter Watson said: "Although the idea is not new in concept as groups like this have been running successfully in several countries for many years, this is the first time that they have been in this form as part of a Business Link range of services and at a price

small businesses can afford.

"Members pay just £2,600 per annum which is a fraction of the cost of one non-executive director."

Eddie Rodgers, of Business Link for West Yorkshire, added: "As well as helping businesses to implement efficiency measures we must also look at supporting the strategic decision making process and that is what these groups are designed to do."
