Two people have been charged with robbing and assaulting a 41-year-old Shipley man who later died.

Bryan Smith, of Rochester Street, Windhill, died five days after he was injured as he returned home from a New Year's Eve party.

A woman and a man, both aged 30, are due to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, July 24, charg-ed with robbing and assaulting Mr Smith.

An inquest opened yesterday.

Detective Superintendent Phil Sedgwick told Bradford Coroner's Court that it was initially treated as a murder investigation but after consultations with the Crown Pros-ecution Service, it was decided there was insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for murder or manslaughter.

The inquest was told that Mr Smith had drunk about 15 pints of beer at a pub before making his way home.

After he sustained the head injury he was taken to the Bradford Royal Infirmary complaining of headaches.

But his condition deteriorated and he died on January 6.

A post-mortem showed that the cause of his death was due to a head injury. Assistant deputy coroner James Turn-bull adjourned the hearing for further inquiries.
