Denholme Children's Gala is back with a bang to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The family fun day on Saturday, July 6, in Foster Park, will culminate in a giant firework display at 9.45pm to celebrate the monarch's jubilee.

In a break from tradition the gala will have a village youth representative, Savannah Astell-Burt, to open the event instead of a gala queen and attendants.

The 13-year-old student at Bingley Grammar School will open the gala at 2.15pm.

One of the organisers, Councillor Maxine Brotherton, said: "We wanted to bring the gala into the 21st century and we thought it would be a good idea to choose a young representative from the village to do the official opening."

The event will begin with a gala procession which leaves Ogden Lane at 1.45pm and make its way via Main Road to the park.

Attractions will include a funfair, Punch and Judy show, falcon display, dog show and, a majorette display, as well as music from a German Oompah band.

Denholme Scout members, who are raising money to pay for their trip to the world jamboree in Thailand, will be running the tea tent.

Villagers who are compiling a neighbourhood renewal action plan for Denholme will also be conducting a survey to find out people's opinions of what is good and bad about the village.

Town Mayor Councillor Anne Jay said the short survey would only take five minutes to complete.

The neighbourhood renewal group is especially keen to canvass the opinions of people in the 20-45 age group.

There is no entrance fee for the gala but organisers are asking people to buy programmes priced at 50p.
