Sisters Hayley and Laura Marsden have received the prestigious Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award.

Hayley, 14, and Laura, 13, are pupils at Oakbank School, Keighley, and were given their awards at a special presentation ceremony on Monday morning.

The Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Award was set up in April 2000 to recognise the contributions made by secondary school students to both their schools and their communities.

It is given to students for improving the life of others, enhancing the school or community in which they live, or showing exemplary progress in personal development, especially in adverse circumstances.

Head of Year Nine Phil Artis asked staff for nominations for the award and as a result Hayley and Laura were put forward.

Hayley has Downs Syndrome, but her mother was determined that she should lead as normal a life as possible and was very keen for her to go through normal schooling.

Teachers describe the 14-year-old as a very confident and competent girl. But as expected with her condition there are some difficulties.

During lessons Hayley has a learning helper but outside class she is on her own. And this is where the girls come into their own.

Mr Artis spoke of how the sisters are extremely supportive of each other in many ways.

He said: "Laura helps Hayley find her way around the school and they both help each other with homework."

On receiving the award Hayley said: "I'm very happy and I love my sister but I was nervous at the presentation."

Laura added: "I am very pleased with the award."

Mr Artis, said: "Hayley and Laura were nominated because of their commitment to each other and in giving 100 per cent of themselves in everything they do.

"We are delighted that two of our pupils have been chosen to receive the award and we at Oakbank are very proud of them."
