Keighley's top young DJ is back on the decks and back with an album that bears a striking resemblance to a particular American rap star.

DJ Smujj, aka former South Craven School student Matthew Birkett, is promoting his debut LP The Real Smujj Shady (anyone for Eminem?) at an under 18's dance night at Oscar's in Keighley on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old has signed to the Goodfellaz records label owned by Keighley's very own hip-hop entrepreneur, event organiser and producer DJ Saby.

Saby has produced over ten tracks for "Smujah" and they are working on a video production deal to promote Smujj's debut single My Name is Smujj, which they hope will be broadcast on MTV Base in November.

The Hip-Hop hopefuls are planning bigger things for later this year with a promotional UK tour in August taking in Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham and London.

From there they are hoping to tour one of the spiritual homes of Hip-Hop - New York - during the winter if they can secure funding from Yorkshire Arts.

DJ Smujj says: "I have been really delighted to work with a professional like Saby who really cares about my interest in hip-hop and has helped me to learn a lot about performing.

"We can't wait to launch my album tour in August."

Saby, aka Sabir Hussain, says: "There are not many young people who are talented like Smujj who can create an atmosphere when they are DJ'ing.

"I hope to bring in more such talent to my record label, whether they are rappers, MCs or DJs. I enjoy creating, moulding and promoting unsigned talent.

"I want to help young teenagers get into hip-hop music. Whether they are Asian, black or white - Hip-Hop is for everyone."

Admission to the under 18s night at Oscars is £3 or £2 with a discount leaflet available from V2 music, HMV, Virgin or by texting 07790 871346.
