Police in Brighouse are working with Calderdale Council in a bid to stop mass car rallies being held in the town.

In January, the Telegraph & Argus reported the impromptu rallies, sometimes attracting up to 600 youngsters, were still taking place, despite police action to tackle them.

Now officers hope traffic calming measures can dissuade young drivers from converging in Armytage Road, near Brighouse Car Auctions.

Inspector Peter Brennand, of Brighouse police, said several hundred cars had turned up last Sunday.

"Why they insist on coming here to have these meetings I do not know. They were very well organised but were causing problems. They were very swift to appear and swift to disappear," he said.

"We are working with the Council's highways department to look at emergency measures to get some sort of traffic calming devices in that spot.

"Calderdale Council may be in a position to put chicanes along the route to make it less exciting for youngsters."

Insp Brennand said the drivers were not doing anything illegal and on occasions, many had been stopped and checked.

A Council spokesman said putting calming measures such as speed humps along Armytage Road could pose problems as a lot of industrial traffic - including wagons and lorries - used the road.

He confirmed that they were working with the police with a view to putting in place measures to overcome the problem.
