Paul Evans and Andy Gray were playing for City in today's closed-doors friendly with Halifax.

The out-of-contract duo have joined the Bantams for training even though there is no guarantee the club will be able to offer them terms for next season.

It is an act of faith from both players particularly midfielder Evans, who skippered Brentford in last

season's Second Division play-off final.

The 27-year-old, who played for Wales under-21s, is being chased by several clubs. Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was particularly keen before switching his attention to Carl Robinson at Wolves.

Winger Gray, released by Nottingham Forest, wants to move closer to his Harrogate roots. The 24-year-old son of former Leeds defender Frank Gray, he spent four years at Elland Road before joining Forest in 1999.

City chief Nicky Law cannot make a move while the club are in administration and still needs to get players out before he can bring in replacements.

Law said: "It's a two-way thing. They can look at us and we can see what they are like although, of course, we can't offer them anything yet.

"But it is a positive sign that they are interested in coming here. Players talk and they've obviously spoken to people who've told them what it is like and how much they are enjoying it."

Evans was one of Law's top summer targets although it was felt his chance had gone when the club lurched into crisis. But Law has kept in touch with the player and must be delighted he is still showing an interest.

Law added: "He has got offers on the table but he isn't rushing into anything. Paul wanted to come up and have a look and we'll give him a couple of games.

"A lot of players out of contract are biding their time at the moment. But they've got to get fit somewhere and we're giving them the chance to see what they think of it here.

"I think everyone will be glad of the game today. The training has been going well and now they are ready to get a bit of match practice."
