The Students' Union at Bradford University is facing legal action from a former student who fell through a window during a club night.

Gareth Harvey was DJ-ing at JB's bar on the campus last August when he suffered the accident, severing an artery in his arm.

He is now suing for damages.

He claims the window was unsafe because it was not made from reinforced glass or marked as a possible hazard.

A former Bradford University student, Mr Harvey had been helping as a volunteer at the Infest industrial music festival last August when the incident took place.

Now he claims the Union has "added insult to injury" by barring him from this year's Infest event - even though he is one of the festival's founders.

The University claim they have very good reason for asking him to stay away.

Recalling the accident last summer, Mr Harvey said: "I was stone cold sober when it happened. I severed an artery and needed stitches. My solicitor has asked them to admit liability because the glass should have been laminated, reinforced or safety glass, or clearly marked as a window."

He said he was annoyed that he was being prevented from taking part in the 2002 Infest event where as a "celebrity" of the industrial music circuit he would have hoped to have appeared on the bill.

John Archbold, the bar's manager and licensee at the Students' Union, said: "We have got substantial reasons for banning Gareth Harvey from our premises and have taken the decision based on our obligation under licensing laws and with the safety of our members and customers in mind. We are delighted to be hosting Infest and look forward to a successful event this year."

Mark House, of Advance Legal Services, said: "I can confirm we are acting for Mr Harvey to recover compensation for the injury he has suffered."
