Travellers who have set up camp in a third city centre car park today sent the defiant message: "We are staying in Bradford."

Bradford Council lawyers are now expected to go back to the county court to seek yet another re-possession order as the travellers in caravans and transit vans move on from one car park to another

The travellers moved onto Simes Street pay and display car park, close to the Oastler shopping centre, on August 12.

But they were accused of "cocking a snook" at the law by Coun Anne Hawkesworth when they crossed the road to settle in St Thomas's Road car park after the Council obtained a possession order for Simes Street.

Officers say they left rubbish which cost hundreds of pounds to clear up.

The travellers were on the move again two days ago when the Council obtained another court order to get them off St Thomas Road.

This time they crossed the road again - in another direction to Tyson Street car park.

Today a camper, who did not want to be named, said: "We are staying in Bradford. We don't want to go because our children are at school here. We've asked the Council to sell us a piece of land but they won't."

Coun Hawkesworth, executive member for the environment, said: "They will have to be moved on and this means the Council has to go to the time and expense of getting another court order and clearing up rubbish.

"I am speaking to the gipsy liaison officer about what is happening. I also want the officers to look at the apparent sales of furniture from the car parks which are not retail areas."

Jeff Frankel, chairman of Bradford Retail Action Group, said: "They are making an absolute mockery of the system. Surely something can be done to stop them from doing this. They are just moving from one car park to another as soon as the Council gets an order."
