Petra, Britain's best-loved dog and a star of BBC Television's Blue Peter for nearly 15 years, died today in Sussex. She was retired from the programme in June and Biddy Baxter, editor of Blue Peter, said today: "We decided it was kinder to let Petra retire because, although in no pain, she was becoming very frail. It seemed unfair to bring her to the studio twice a week."

Ken Russell, the Bradford winner of the Tour of Britain cycling event, demonstrated some of the courage which gave him victory in the year's biggest road race, when he won the Aire Valley Road Club's 66-mile Wilsden road race. In the first ten miles he was delayed by gear trouble and had a long chase to catch the leaders, who at one point were more than two minutes ahead of him.
