Four Scouts from Denholme will be swapping turkey for Thailand after raising enough cash to fund a trip of a lifetime.

The members of Denholme Scout troop have raised the £10,000 necessary to fund their journey to the World Jamboree in Thailand during December, attended by some 30,000 scouts from across the globe.

The youngsters making the trip to the far east are Ben Ryan and Vanessa Gill, both 13, and Savannah Astell-Burt and Emma Ryan, who are 14.

For the past year they have been busy raising funds with a host of activities including helping out with refreshments on gala day.

They have also received a grant from the Greenwood Memorial Fund - a trust set up for young people in Denholme seeking educational travel.

The fund was set up in the memory of brothers Felix and Rupert Greenwood, who died in the Bradford City fire.

Organiser Graham Astell-Burt said: "It has been hard work and a bit of a struggle at times but we are pleased to finally reach the total.

"We would like to say a big thankyou to the Greenwood Memorial Fund, local companies, people in Denholme and everyone else who has supported the jamboree fund.

"They are going to take photos and slides and when they come back we are going to put on a show in the Mechanics Institute."

The youngsters will be in a contingent of Scouts from West Yorkshire who will jet out to Thailand on December 22 for three weeks.

After taking part in the jamboree the Scouts will stay with a host family in Malaysia to discover more about the country's culture.

Graham, who is now a leader at 23rdKeighley St Anne's troop, says fundraising efforts are now being concentrated on helping Denholme Scout Naomi Jacques.

Naomi is travelling to Mexico next summer to work in an orphanage and needs to raise £1,300 to fund the trip.
