Keighley provided three winners at the North of England inter-counties athletics championships held at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Barnsley at the weekend.

On Saturday, Alistair Clay won the senior men's 400 metres hurdles in exactly 60 seconds, while Ben Ambler took second in the U-17 men's 400m hurdles in 61.7sec and Oliver Robinson third in the U-15 boys 80m hurdles in a near season's best 12.3sec.

The following day Rebecca Long won the U-17 ladies 300m hurdles in 46.67sec and Amy Teasdale took first place in the U-17 ladies pole vault clearing a height of 2.70 metres.

Frances Noble produced a season's best 12.08sec in the U-17 ladies 80m hurdles for fifth place while younger sister Emily took second in the U-15 girls 75m hurdles in 11.66sec.

Suzanne Roberts, who was ninth at the Commonwealth Games ladies hammer in Manchester, took second at the inter-counties with a throw of 56.60 metres.

In the North East contest at Cleckheaton on Saturday, Ella Teasdale was second in her first hammer competition with a throw of 25.52m.

Apart from Suzanne Roberts, who has now moved away to work in Loughborough, all these athletes train at Greenhead track through the City of Bradford Development scheme.

This weekend Rebecca Long, who represented England last year, Frances and Emily Noble will be competing in the English Schools national championships for combined events - heptathlon or pentathlon - at Derby.

The following weekend the season comes to an end with these three being joined by Ella and Amy Teasdale, Ben Ambler and Oliver Robinson at the Yorkshire Combined Events championship at Rotherham.

There will be a short break before winter training resumes in November.
