Burglary victims in Pudsey and Calverley are being promised help to keep them safe.

The area is to get two new Crime Prevention Officers who are aiming to combat repeat offences.

PC Neil Walmsley, 49, and PC David Harrison, 48, have developed the strategy that they believe has reduced burglaries in their previous base of Weetwood.

PC Walmsely, who is now based at Horsforth, said: "If we can stop burglaries at home or at work in the first place with prevention information, then that's great."

Under the repeat victimisation strategy, PC Walmsley and PC Harrison will visit each burglary victim to offer comprehensive home security advice. This includes information on the latest crime trends to look out for and avoid.

Property-marking stickers will also be supplied for easier ownership identification should the items be stolen.

When the full service is introduced later this year, an enhanced response will be given to householders who have been burgled twice in 12 months.

Daily police visits and possible covert police technology to catch and deter thieves will be offered to people who are victim to a third burglary in a year.

Commercial premises will also feel the effects of this new streamlined approach.

The officers will assess each commercial premises that has been burgled and highlight the most appropriate security measures for that company.

Bridging the activities between the community and the officers will be recently-retired PC Steve Grant, who previously managed crime prevention in Calverley.

Returning on a part-time basis, Mr Grant will take on a stronger neighbourhood watch role.

This will allow members of the community to be more involved and pro-active.

Leeds councillor Andrew Carter - who represents Pudsey north - said: "I am very pleased that we are going to have a much more pro-active crime prevention policy. We still need more bobbies on the beat to create a perceptible presence and to deter crime.

"There's been a 50 per cent rise in crime and we're getting more complaints about it. But all extra resources are welcome."
