People with learning difficulties are being taught by Bradford College how to use public transport.

The college has set up a Travel Training Unit to help its trainees get about independently.

Tailored to the individual needs of the student, the training can involve anything from learning to cross the road safely, using buses and trains unassisted and understanding and paying fares.

Project Manager Stephen Frost said: "Hopping on a bus or a train is done without a second thought, but for many people this just isn't possible.

"The inability to travel across town is a major barrier to education, employment, leisure and general social inclusion, so the advantages of successful travel training are enormous."

After a successful pilot, the project has been taken on by the Bradford District Care Trust which plans to launch the scheme in Keighley.

Anyone wishing to invest a few hours a week to become a Travel Trainer in Bradford or Keighley should call Stephen Frost (Bradford) on (01274) 436180 or Geraldine Fox (Keighley) on (01535) 680846.
