Centre Kelvin Daulet scored a try in injury-time to give Thornton a 20-16 win against Bank Top Harriers at Hill Top.

The game was a cracking advert for Pennine Division Six rugby and if both sides maintain this commitment, passion and skill for the remainder of the campaign they are certain to be in line for honours.

The first quarter saw defences well on top. Harriers scrum half Bob Brown probed and hassled while Thornton forwards Tony Parkinson and Dave Williams proved a real handful with their hard foraging.

Thornton opened the scoring when centre Simon Hall played the ball quickly and the alert Daulet dived in at the corner.

Harriers full back Johnny Hopkins caused havoc in the home ranks with a determined weaving run which unfortunately fizzled out due to lack of numbers but he was undeterred and positioned himself superbly to take an inside pass from Brown to level the scores.

Bank Top's purple patch continued and loose forward Nick Greenwood set up field position for hooker Mark Conway to twist out of a tackle and plant the ball at the side of the uprights, Brown adding the extras.

Thornton hooker Darren Ellerton produced a precision kick to the corner and lanky wingman Steve Bland out-jumped allcomers to gleefully accept the chance to close the half 8-10.

Thornton stand-off Damien Birkett sold a dummy to dive over. Soon after the Harriers put the ball out on the full and Ellerton made no mistake from bang in front with the penalty.

Hopkins once again broke clear and looked a certain scorer only to be recalled for a forward pass, but he crowned an excellent afternoon's work when he produced a clever change of direction to cross near to the posts to leave Brown a simple kick, which put Bank Top ahead 16-14.

With just two minutes left on the clock Bank Top lost the plot and were penalised three times in succession for bad discipline which inevitably led to second-row forward Neil Riley being despatched to the sin-bin.

Ellerton stepped up to level the scores from the resulting free-kick.

A draw looked certain until in the fifth minute of extra-time. Ellerton hoisted another huge up-and-under and when the ball was dropped Daulet collected in style to claim the spoils.

In Division One, Clayton lost 62-0 at Thornhill Trojans. The scoreline fails to reflect the true story, however, as the Villagers were forced to play most of the match with just 11 men due to early injuries. Coach Paul Gill gave his young hooker Chris Parkinson all the plaudits for his leadership and never-say-die attitude in what was a valiant performance.

Clayton's Johnny Grogan also caused the Trojans problems before Clayton were eventually overwhelmed.

Keighley Town faced a tough Westgate Redoubt side at Marley and lost out 25-6 to the Wakefield side.

Town scored all their points in the first ten minutes, skipper Neil Kennedy landing three early penalties to take Town into a 6-2 lead that lasted until just before the break.

However, Westgate made sure they were leading at the interval with two quick tries, a conversion and a drop goal.

Town defended superbly against the huge Westgate forwards but were let down by the 65th-minute sin-binning of full back Andy Stokes. While he was off the field they conceded a further two tries and a conversion which maintains Westgate's unbeaten record.

Silsden's fine season continues. They went to Oldham side Hollin-wood and racked up an impressive 46-6 victory to climb to joint third in the Division Two table, just four points behind leaders Todmorden, but with two games in hand.

Player-coach Jon Gwilliam was pleased with the result,

saying: "We expected a tough game. We went to Hollinwood with a scratch side missing several experienced players, yet in the end we were far too good for them.

"It seemed that everything we'd been doing in training over the last few months suddenly clicked into place."

Particularly impressive was 18-year-old Matthew Bowness. He has moved in from the wing to deputise at hooker and, after bagging a try last week, grabbed two at Oldham and deservedly picked up the man-of-the-match award.

Elder brother Andy continued his fine form with two tries and six goals and further touchdowns for Silsden came through Phil Lane, Mark Stott and debutant Matthew Robinson, who came off the bench to score the try of the game from halfway.

Keighley Cougar Cubs Under-17s remain unbeaten and picked up two points without having to touch a ball. They were due to play Wakefield side Crofton Panthers at Marley, but the visitors refused to turn up.
