Two armed robberies within 12 hours have led to renewed calls for CCTV from Cleckheaton traders.

On Wednesday, four men forced their way into Tesco's in Northgate, minutes after the store had closed for the evening.

They were stopped by a staff member who was sprayed with some liquid as they approached the cashpoint machine.

But the employee activated the alarm and the men fled empty-handed to three cars in the car park - believed to have been a Subaru Impreza, a Volvo estate and a white 4x4.

At 9am yesterday, two men in balaclavas and armed with a gun broke into the Lunn Poly shop in Cheapside through the roof.

As female staff arrived for work, the men threatened them with a handgun and told them to open the safe. But they ran off towards Bradford Road when the safe wouldn't open, leaving the staff in shock.

Traders have for years pushed for CCTV in the town, and now, Spenborough Chamber of Trade is demanding the idea be looked at again.

President Keith Joplin said the Chamber would be talking to police again about protection for the town.
