New awards were launched last night for people who have helped unite the district in harmony.

Individuals, organisations, schools and businesses which strive to promote community harmony will now be honoured for their efforts.

The annual awards will recognise people for their outstanding contributions and entries are invited from today.

Members of the awards panel include the Lord Mayor, Councillor Richard Wightman; Perry Austin-Clarke, Editor of the Telegraph & Argus; Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton; Bradford Vision's chief executive Sharmila Gandhi and the Council's chief executive Ian Stewart.

And many of the panel attended the launch in St Peter's House, Bradford, last night.

The new Bradford and Keighley Youth Parliament has also been invited to provide a representative to complete the panel.

The awards will cover four categories: individuals, schools and youth groups, community and voluntary organisations and businesses.

The projects should demonstrate "significant and specific community achievement" and promote unity between people of different backgrounds and ages.

Schemes which demonstrate diversity through commerce and industry are also sought.

The scheme is part of the Council's district-wide community cohesion campaign and aims to encourage people to make contributions to the growth and development of the district, while recognising the needs of all residents.

Coun Eaton said: "These awards aim to acknowledge the excellent work being done to bring the district's diverse communities and people together."

Projects nominated for consideration must have taken place during the 12 months before the entry closing date of January 31, 2003.

Today, the T&A's managing editor, Peter Greenwood, said the newspaper was happy to support the awards.

"The Telegraph & Argus is delighted to support this important innovation by the Lord Mayor.

"We are extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity to showcase the tremendous efforts of the many individuals and organisations who are quietly working towards greater tolerance among people of different races, creeds and generations.

"Much has been begun over the last year but much more still needs to be achieved and we see this initiative and the publicity surrounding it as catalysts which will spark an ever-growing movement for mutual respect, toleration and understanding."

Entry packs are available from the Equalities' Unit on (01274) 754832 or e-mail: qudrat.shah@bradford.gov.uk.

The winners will be announced at a dinner hosted by the Lord Mayor next March.
