Bingley Harriers are to represent England in the final of the European Cross Country Championships after a superb performance in the Reebok Challenge at Liverpool last weekend.

On-form runner Chris Cariss led the Bingley team home with a tenth place finish in a time of 24min 54 sec, just 30 seconds behind winner Matt Smith of Tipton Harrers.

He was backed up by 36 Mark Croasdale (26:05), 41 Andy Peace (26:14), 45 Ian Holmes (26:17), 53 John Convery (1st V40 26:35) and 61 Stuart McDonald (26:53).

Local athletes also performed well in the British Fell Championship relays which took place in the Langdale Valley in the heart of the Lake District.

Superb spring-like weather helped top competitors with the Harriers taking fourth place in both the men's and ladies races.

Many of the top performers will be taking part in the Withins Skyline Race which starts from Penistone Hill Country Park at 11.30am tomorrow.

The seven mile route visits Oxenhope Stoop, Top Withins and Bronte Bridge followed by a scramble up Bronte Waterfalls before returning to Penistone.

Four times winner Ian Holmes will be away on international duty, representing Great Britain in an Italian relay race, leaving the way open for a new winner to take the trophy.

Among the favourites is local man Andy Peace, from Haworth, who won the prestigious Ben Nevis Race earlier in the year.

Junior races for Under-8s, Under-10s, Under-12s, under-14s and Under-16s start at 10.30am with all participants getting a 'goody bag'.

Entry for the senior race is £3 with all runners getting a Cadbury's 'Curly Wurly' to replenish energy supplies.
