HEDLEY Verity received the invitation he once felt might never drop through his letter-box again when he was called up to play for the most famous team in rugby union, the Barbarians, against the Combined Services at Portsmouth on November 12.

The Wharfedale flanker was called up for the same fixture last season, but had to call off because he suffered a trapped nerve in neck between getting the invite and the day of the game.

There was the inevitable fear that he might have missed his chance of claiming one of the famous jerseys and matching club-mates John Spencer and John Lawn, but the Barbarians management have obviously kept him in mind.

"To be honest, it is something I haven't thought a lot about because things happen in sport," says Verity. "Obviously I'm delighted to get a second chance and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that I can stay clear of problems this time around.

"It's an honour for the club and for me and something I'm looking forward to. I know 'Lawny' enjoyed the experience and I'm sure I will - all being well."
