The Second World War Experience Centre in Horsforth is appealing to readers to let it safeguard their war memories.

Although the war affected people across the world, the centre is interested in the stories of individuals who were caught up in events.

The centre, which set up permanent home in Horsforth last December, is hoping to document as many memories of the war as possible before experiences are lost forever. So far, staff have meticulously recorded 4,000 people's experiences between 1939 and 1945 from many different countries, using tape recorders, photographs, diaries and mementoes.

As well as forces veterans, they want to hear from anyone else involved, including people on the Home Front, Land Army, evacuees, the Home Guard and the Auxiliary Fire Service.

They particularly wish to find people who served in the Mercantile Marines or who had exceptional experiences.

Volunteers are also needed to help catalogue information and gather material and tape recordings.
