SIR - Why has Chellow Dene not got a permanent council warden? It is one of Bradford's gems but it always seems to attract the wrong type of people.

It has the legitimate fishing parties around the top reservoir and the odd jogger and dog walker and that's how it should be, but what about all the youths that abuse it on a daily basis?

A few years ago it went through a revamp (on the cheap) to attract more people to this truly beautiful spot but most of the new seats are scratched on with names and expletives.

We had fireworks fired at us there last week. Eight-to-ten-year-olds were firing rockets out of their hands into the water. When I approached them I was given lots of verbal and threats of a baseball-bat attack from another family member. This child was only eight, if that.

This city has a lot to answer for when a child can threaten an adult. So I think we need a warden. No excuses Bradford Council. You own it, you make it safe for us all!

Andrew Bolt, Hazelhurst Road, Daisy Hill, Bradford 9.

SIR - Is Housing Stock Transfer on hold or just held back? It was due to take place in February, now March! Information on the same seems to be drying up.

Are things all right in this field or are tenants and tax-payers due for a rude awakening in the not-too-distant future when the true position of all concerned is known? Council, council officers, council staff, councillors, new board members and shadow board members need to make sure we do not throw good money after bad and finish at square one plus a large debt with interest through no fault of our own.

S Walsh, Church Street, Bingley.

SIR - Re the "structure" proposed for the roundabout at Thornbury, I think it is an improvement on a light bulb and a needle.

The B structure should not only be on the Leeds Road entry to the city; it should also be on other main routes - Manchester Road, Wakefield Road, Harrogate Road, and the A650 at Saltaire roundabout.

"Business leaders said it was too weak!" Really! I think it is very businesslike and could be printed on council stationery, tourist leaflets, and any Bradford-based firms' publicity material. It lends itself to being reduced in size.

Why the choice of Leeds Road anyway? This route to the city is the most untidy and has been awaiting road widening for the many years.

If this goes ahead then please improve the rest of this route.

Miss D Cook, Azalea Court, Bradford 3.

SIR - It is a disgrace to our city that an elderly person has to go on hunger strike so she can live in peace and be looked after by dedicated people.

Councillors are pushing for Capital of Culture. Whose culture? The elderly are our culture.

There's plenty of money for councillors' salaries, for education which the Council have made a mess of, and for our Capital of Culture bid.

But a couple of million to keep rest homes for elderly open? No.

Our group intends to find out which councillors vote for this and we intend to put up a campaign against them.

J R Smith (chairman, Retired Persons Action Group), Flawith Drive, Fagley.

SIR - I am one of the many people who have to wear a hearing aid. Because of so many people using mobile phones I think my hearing is getting worse. Also they are doing damage to my hearing aid.

In hospitals mobiles must be turned off because of the interference with and to delicate instruments. A hearing aid is a very delicate instrument to put in or behind the ear, so could there be some restrictions on mobile phone users to only use them, say, on the back seats or the upper deck of public transport.

What danger are they to a person with a "pacemaker implant"?

E Hodgson, Bennet Court, Weston Drive, Otley.

SIR - For the information of Bradford Vision (who are these unelected people) and our local Assistant Chief Probation Officer, I know hundreds of unfortunate young people unable to get jobs who did not cause millions of pounds worth of damage who could do with a lot of help and support.

Perhaps Mrs Ghandi and Mr Siddall would support the rioters cleaning up the rubbish and litter around the city. This may help their chances of employment.

Barry Foster, Gilstead Lane, Gilstead.

SIR - Would any of your readers like to adopt an older cat from us? We have several elderly cats currently in our care awaiting homes, but always passed over by potential owners in favour of younger cats.

The elderly cats are in good health, and have mostly come into our care due to the death or illness of their previous owner. We would like homes for these cats with older persons who have previous experience with cats and who have no other pets or young children.

Although the cats are all healthy, we are willing to come to an agreement regarding future veterinary bills should the cats be adopted by senior citizens or persons on a low income. Please telephone (01535) 647184, evenings or weekends.
