Average weekly earnings for full-time workers in Bradford are well below the national average wage, according to a new report.

The survey by the GMB, Britain's general union, found the gross average weekly pay for a full-time worker in the city is £402.10 - £62.65 less than the national average of £464.75.

The study found gross average weekly pay for full-time workers in all of Yorkshire and Humberside is below the national average.

The average wage in Yorkshire and Humberside is £409.83, making it the third lowest in the country when ranked against the other regions.

The region with the lowest average wage is the North West - £399.27, while the highest gross average weekly wages are found in London - £624.29. Paul Kenny, GMB senior official and member of the TUC general council, said: "These figures point to the unfair distribution of income from Britain's labour market.

"White collar, professional and managerial workers are getting an unfair share if the national cake. Manual workers and all women workers in manufacturing, in private and public services, who predominate in most regions earn way below the national average wage of £464.75.

The national minimum wage of £4.20 an hour equates to £157.50 a week, which is more than £300 less that the national average.

"Either there will have to be a serious re-rating of pay for the lowest paid or taxes will have to increase on the high earners to bring fairness back to the system."

The gross average weekly wage for full-time workers in Calderdale is £430.87, Leeds is £428.68, North Yorkshire is £406.18, while in Kirklees it stands at £399.58.
