HORSFORTH-based John Convery of Bingley Harriers took part in his first ever international veterans' race in Ireland at the weekend.
The 40 year-old contested the British Masters Cross-Country International at Ballymena and came home in silver medal position just ten seconds behind the winner fellow Englishman Julian Critchlow.
Mike Boyle, also of England, completed a clean sweep giving Convery a team gold medal as part of the England team.
Also winning team gold after her fourth place individually in the women's over-45 event was Ilkley's Jo Prowse.
The race involved seven International teams competing over a muddy six lap circuit.
Convery admitted to being very tired but was determined to return in 2003 to claim the gold.
