Keighley Police have reported a good response to the launch of their Christmas campaign to curb car crime in Haworth last weekend.

Detective Inspector Trevor Gasson, dressed up in the costume of a Victorian Policeman, led the operation, which coincided with the village's Scroggling the Holly weekend.

Accompanied by his 10-year-old son, who was dressed as a street urchin, he and fellow officers spent the day patrolling the streets of Haworth keeping a watchful eye on things and giving advice to motorists on vehicle security.

Det Insp Gasson said the operation had been so successful that police had decided to repeat the exercise next month.

He said: "We had no vehicle crime at all on Sunday. We had a very good response and we made contact with a lot of members of the public face to face.

"We even had the Town Crier yelling at one point for people not to leave valuables in their car. If we saw people leaving their vehicle then we would go up to them and check if they had left it safe.

"We were also approaching people in the street and asking them if they had made sure their cars were secure.

"We found one vehicle that had been left open and my 10-year-old son found a car that had a laptop computer left in full view on the seat.

"We are going to run the event again on Sunday, December 16, during the candlelight weekend."
