Town criers came from all over the country to take part in the first competition of its kind in Haworth.

The event was part of the Scroggling the Holly weekend and really proved itself something to shout about.

Organiser Keighley town crier Michael Walton said the whole event had run like clockwork, and praised the camaraderie of the criers.

He says: "It was absolutely brilliant. The criers were all fantastic.

"Some had travelled from far away including Swindon, St Albans, Bishop's Castle and Lincoln.

"Others represented Otley, Ilkley and Huddersfield. It was great to see the camaraderie of everyone joining together to make it such a success."

The criers first gave their own cries about the places they represented before going on to cry about Haworth.

The results of Saturday's competition saw Martin Hallett of St Alban's win the category of best overall crier. Terry Stubbings representing the city of Lincoln came second, with Victor Watson of Huddersfield third.

The best ambassador category was won by Terry Stubbings.

Martin Hallett won the best dressed crier category and his wife Jan won the best-dressed escort prize.

Mr Walton was keen to thank the sponsors of the competition, which included the Fleece Inn, Caf 52, the White Lion, Wilds, Ye Sleeping House, Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and the Old Hall.

He says: "The businesses of Haworth have all been spectacular - they've really put a lot into this. And hopefully if we can generate the same interest and support next year we can hold another competition on the same date that's just as successful."
