Burley Trojans 3

A week is a long time in football. Only seven days earlier Trojans had been left licking their wounds as Ilkley dumped them out of the District Cup. On Saturday Chris Worts' troops exacted revenge as they brushed aside their neighbours to replace them at the top of the Premier Division.

Young striking sensation Gareth Goodison was the Trojans' hero, weighing in with two superb goals inside the first 20 minutes to leave Ilkley with a mountain to climb.

Trojans got off to a dream start with a goal inside three minutes. A neat move between Chris Connolly and Stuart Copley resulted in the latter slipping a perfect pass to Goodison who skipped past Matthew Trimnell before calmly slotting the ball past Robert Tankard in the Ilkley goal.

The home side should have levelled within minutes but Steve Hall could only steer Bruce Hogg's driven cross into the side netting from close range. With Ilkley struggling to find any sort of rhythm Trojans continued to probe and the defensive pairing of Trimnell and Andy Bloom, so dominant the previous week, endured a torrid time against the pace and movement of Goodison and the guile of Connolly.

The frustration of the home side resulted in a number of needless free- kicks being conceded and from one of these Trojans extended their lead on 20 minutes. Right-back Ian McKain's kick was flicked on by the excellent Copley and Goodison connected with an acrobatic volley which arrowed past the helpless Tankard into goal.

Connolly netted from a Lofthouse pass but was ruled off-side and then Goodison came within a whisker of a sensational hat-trick when his snapshot flew just wide as Trojans threatened to overrun their highly rated opponents.

Any threat from the Ilkley forwards was comfortably snuffed out by the defence in which Man-of-the-Match Chris Lockwood excelled at left-back.

Trojans' 'keeper Chris Hargreaves was finally called into action to save a low Hogg drive. On the stroke of half-time former Trojan Jono Hughes latched on to a long Bloom pass to fire a well struck effort just over the angle.

Worts in his half-time team talk cautioned his side against sitting back on their lead but they soon found themselves on the back foot at the start of the second-half as Ilkley briefly rallied. Lofthouse cleared off the line from Dale Hoyle's powerful header and Bloom was just wide with a low, rasping drive.

Hargreaves hung on to a Hall header following Graham Richardson's well flighted free-kick but the Trojans' rearguard refused to buckle.

It was not all one-way traffic and Tankard denied Goodison as he stretched to reach Copley's teasing pass and then centre-half Kieren Hanogue almost prompted a third goal for the visitors. Picking up possession inside his own half he set off and twice swapped passes with Lofthouse who saw his low shot well saved by Tankard and when the ball ran loose Copley fired the rebound wide of the inviting target.

In the next attack Nick Quaife fired in a 25 yard effort which Tankard saved but the Trojans skipper did not have to wait long to get his name on the scoresheet. With 20 minutes remaining Lockwood, picking up his second match point in three games having returned to his best form, found Quaife and he controlled well before tricking his way past Bloom and rifling in a low shot from the edge of the area to put the game beyond Ilkley.

With the league campaign at the half way stage things couldn't be tighter at the top with only three points separating these two local rivals, Kirkby Malzeard and Boroughbridge Reserves.

In sharp contrast to their league results Trojans Reserves' miserable cup record continued as they made another early exit, this time from the League Medal competition.

It was a solitary Michael Hughes strike midway through the second-half which enabled the visitors to progress to the second round. Missing the influential Phil Constantine and Jamie Davey through injury Trojans were a pale shadow of themselves and, whilst enjoying good possession, lacked the composure to convert this into goals.

There was little meaningful goalmouth action in the first period. The best that Trojans could muster was a chance for young Guy Smith but he lost control.

With Man-of-the-Match James Hoskin prompting from midfield Trojans looked capable of unlocking the defence but time and again they were unable to find any real quality with the final ball.

Hughes finally broke the deadlock when he ran on to a pass from midfield before rounding Fendyke to score. Smith had a couple of chances to level and Hoskin stabbed wide.

With the match referee being forced to withdraw Jamie Davey took charge and earned plaudits from both sides.

Trojans entertain unbeaten Sherwood on Saturday, 2.15pm. (Meet at the Cricket Club at 1.30pm).
