Guiseley 2

GUISELEY suffered mixed results in their two games last weekend beating bottom placed Trafford on Saturday but then losing to the impressive Spennymoor on Monday.

Both games were played at Nethermoor and Guiseley were back to frustrating their supporters. Saturday's game against the basement side was very much in need of a lift when play dragged into the 75th minute. Fortunately that came from midfielder Peter Sumner with a stunning goal.

The former Burley Trojans player used to score some stunners for them from distance and he now appears to have the confidence to try his luck at the higher level.

His effort from outside the box flew into the top corner of the net leaving Trafford 'keeper Ryan McMahon grasping thin air.

Up to that point it had been nearly all Guiseley with Trafford mounting the odd attack. Guiseley however could not complete their work.

Guiseley lacked striker Ryan Senior, who is likely to be out for at least a month with damaged ankle ligaments sustained in the FA Cup tie at Luton. They were also without Mark Stuart whose wife had been admitted to hospital.

Nathan Hay was brought back into the defence with Gary Shaw moving forward to take the striker's role partnered by Kevin Newhouse.

Guiseley tried to impose themselves on the game from the off but all their good work came to nothing. David Henry's teasing cross just evaded Newhouse and Sumner tried to get his measure powering in a 20 yard drive just wide.

Trafford defended desperately at times. McMahon took the ball off Cooke's head from a resulting corner and the 'keeper also did well to save Sumner's shot across goal and although the ensuing corner caused havoc in the Trafford defence Guiseley were unable to take advantage.

Trafford pushed forward and were denied by James Nettleton's timely header. Chris Hill also did well to save Bennett's low shot.

Shaw broke free and his lob was met by Cooke who headed over. Peter Atkinson then put in an inviting cross which was headed over by Nettleton. Trafford hit back with Bennett hitting a rising shot over.

The second-half opened in much the same manner. Henry's shot was parried by McMahon and Newhouse was just unable to make contact with the loose ball. Newhouse then returned the favour and Henry powered just wide.

As Guiseley piled on the pressure Nathan Hay was set free by a superb crossfield pass from Clive Freeman and he put in a hard, low cross that missed everybody.

Simon Trevitt's downward header was cleared off the line and it looked as if Guiseley would never score.

Sumner however was brimming with determination and he picked the ball up on 75 minutes just outside the penalty area. He hammered in a shot that had goal written all over.

Stung into action Trafford had perhaps their best spell of the game and McAllister ran the length of the pitch before crossing but Hill was there to collect.

Substitutions proved the correct move for Guiseley as two of them combined to produce a goal which finally nailed the result. Andrew Shuttleworth cut in from the right for Richard Chattoe to meet his low cross in the six yard box and side- foot the ball wide of McMahon to secure three welcome points.

Spennymoor 2

Guiseley had their chances in the early stages before the late arriving Spennymoor had had time to settle. Once the lads from Durham had got into their stride however it was an uphill battle for Guiseley.

James Nettleton had to go off injured early when he damaged a shoulder in a collision with his own goalkeeper.

Guiseley struggled to make any impact on a resolute Spennymoor defence and goals from Chris Lynch on 35 minutes and Anthony Woodhouse on 80 minutes sealed victory for the visitors.

Mark Stuart was left to rue early chances which could have put a different complexion on the game but Guiseley's woeful final ball and some poor passing all round allowed Spennymoor to get into the groove and they firmly shut the door in Guiseley's face.

l On Saturday Guiseley visit Radcliffe with the Reserves at home to Southport (2 pm).
