Festive revellers in Bradford's pubs and clubs are being challenged to raise cash for cancer research as they have fun this season.

The Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can... Appeal is urging landlords and landladies, regulars and partygoers to dig deep this Christmas.

Fliers promoting the challenge are on their way to pubs and clubs in the district so that everyone can get involved in the fight against cancer.

Appeal manager Tish Burton is certain the people of Bradford will be generous and game for a laugh.

"We could all have some fun this December by taking part in the challenge. They can do whatever they like to raise a sum of money for the appeal," she said.

Every pub or club that takes part will have their name in the T&A and the biggest fundraiser will be awarded a special trophy by the Bradford Can... appeal.

To help people in their challenge to make the most of the fundraising potential of the city, the appeal office can provide stickers, collection boxes, posters and lapel pins.

The appeal has already raised a sensational £800,000 towards its £1 million target, which will fund work at Bradford University's Cancer Research Centre where treatments to fight the disease are developed. When the £1 million target is reached, that will unlock a further £4 million funding into the city from Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Burton added: "We are so close to raising this million. We need one huge push from the Bradford community and we can make it.

"Please get on board and help us. If every pub and club in the Bradford district raised a small amount, it will take us to our target."

Already getting involved with fundraising festivities are staff at the Goldsborough pub in Captain Street, Bradford.

Landlady Sharon Malone, pictured, cannot wait to prise donations from her customers.

Her daughter Emma was born with cancer 18 years ago, so Sharon is an experienced advocate for cancer charities.

"We're going to have a lot of fun here because it's one of my favourite charities and the people who come in here are really generous," she said.

Fundraising tips from the appeal office include holding a raffle, a singing competition or an auction.
