Youngsters at a Bingley school are setting up their own radio station.

A group of 17 pupils at Beckfoot School are putting the finishing touches to Psychedelic Sounds before its launch on January 13.

The station, thought to be the first at a Bradford school, is the idea of Year Nine pupil Megan Taffs.

"I approached three other pupils back in March and we really wanted to set up a station," said the 14-year-old, an interviewer on the station.

"We approached the head teacher and he said it was a really good idea and it's been going from there really."

Head teacher David Horn thought the idea was so imaginative he granted £2,000 from the school's funds towards its development.

A range of computerised radio software was purchased from CKE Distribution Ltd in John Street, Shipley, and auditions were held to choose the radio's team.

Now the pupils, who include presenters, interviewers, technicians and designers, are gearing up for the station's grand launch.

The station, which will initially run on Friday lunchtimes, will broadcast to pupils through the public hall speakers. It is hoped the programmes will be extended to the whole school when loud speakers are put up around the building.

Student producer Richard Fearnside, 15, said: "We have been organising this project for months and are proud of the fact that we are the first school radio station to be launched in Bradford.

"We are now looking forward to our launch party, hopefully with some special guests to open the radio for us."

Media teacher Helen Angel said: "The students are very excited about the launch of this brand new radio station.

"Not only can it be used for making lunchtimes more relaxed for the students, but also as an extra facility in our teaching on media topics."

Mr Horn said: "It has been driven by the students and the staff, who have given them determined support. It was the pupils' idea and vision and they're fulfilling their potential."

Celebrities, including Pop Stars: The Rivals hopeful Kimberley Walsh and singing sensation Gareth Gates, have been approached to attend the launch on January 13.

Anyone who would like to advertise on the station can contact the school on (01274) 771444.

Pupils Richard Fearnside, Emma Hudson, Megan Taffs and Maria Mehrin are pictured getting ready for the station's launch.
