Pupils at Holy Family School sampled the delights of Spanish culture and cuisine in a special day devoted to the country.

The Keighley school held the event to promote the language and to encourage pupils to continue learning Spanish after year nine, when it is no longer compulsory.

Among the activities organised for the event were a salsa dancing demonstration and a lesson by two Leeds residents who originate from the Basque region, a Spanish dance workshop, a Spanish meal and paella prepared by students from Craven College, Skipton.

Every class was given a Spanish theme to work on. For example, Spanish resettlement was studied in geography, Picasso was studied in art and the Spanish Civil War was studied in history.

In addition, quizzes and competitions took place around the school, as well as a Spanish football tournament and showings of Spanish films and various displays.

Other languages taught at Holy Family -- which now has specialist language college status -- such as Italian, Japanese and French, are due to have a day dedicated to each subject later in the year.

Showing off their salsa prowess are students Sophie Keenan, left, and Jessica Towers, with dance instructors Sokol Abazi and Itxaso Torrontegui
