Poetry, drumming and rock music are among the varied sounds coming from an Oxenhope mill. Three local men have transformed an old building into a state-of-the-art recording studio. Paul Howarth is taking care of the administration while his son Ben Howarth and friend Peter MacDonald use the equipment. The trio's Square One Studios ties in with a Keighley-based record company set up last year.

Since opening in December the studio has recorded music for Keighley bands The Pipers and Brand New Analogues. Coming up are sessions with a group that reads poetry and stories, and the Small World youth drumming band. Haworth man Paul says the studio has three separate areas, a vocal/drum booth, 'live' room, and the main mixing room. He says: "The studio is for anybody. It's as diverse as it wants to be."

Paul says Ben and Peter have about seven years' experience of recording music, mostly in their home studio. The three men are among the 11 members of the recently-formed Hand-some Dog Records collective. The company -- whose members include musicians, designers and DJs -- aims to find local talent and help take it to the top. Performers signed up to Handsome Dog will be offered recording sessions at Square One. The studio is open evenings and weekends, and can be contacted on 01535 642363 (day) and 644219 (evenings).
