Council chiefs are flushed with pride after a village's new state-of-the-art public loos went down a treat with competition judges.

The innovative £160,000 toilet block in Haworth Park has been awarded a three-star rating in Canon Hygiene's Loo of the Year roll of honour.

A certificate has been handed over for display at the futuristic facility, which was opened last year.

A second public loo block in the Bradford district - at Ilkley's central car park - has also been given the three-star prestigious plaudit.

Judging took into account a range of issues including overall cleanliness, hand-washing facilities, how loo rolls were dispensed, sanitary arrangements, nappy-changing provision and signposting to the toilets.

Brian Dobson, Bradford Council's cleansing inspector who nominated both blocks in the contest, said: "This is a credit to our cleansing team and everyone who works to keep these toilets in top condition.

"We would like to go further next year and get four or five stars if we can."

Local district councillor Glen Miller said he was delighted at the award, but renewed calls for desperately needed improvements to the village's other public toilets.

He told us: "For two toilet blocks in the district to pick up an award is good news, and proves it is not a flash in the pan.

It is very pleasing that the facilities are being recognised for their high quality.

I now look forward to some much-needed refurbishment work at the toilets in the Parsonage car park."

His comments are echoed by parish council chairman Peter Hill.

The parish council is pressing for improvements at the museum car park block and the reopening of the toilets at Penistone Hill.

He said: "The new toilets are excellent and I am pleased that they have won recognition. It's good news for the village.

"We do not expect the other public toilet facilities in Haworth to be of such a standard, but to have them open and in a reasonable condition would be a huge step forward."
