An 11-year-old girl's painting has been chosen as the design for the cover of a new charity book about the heart.

Rebecca Brooksbank, a pupil at Lees Primary School, was a guest at the launch of Stories from the Heart last Friday at Leeds General Infirmary.

Her picture depicted a girl carrying three balloons, each with a message about the heart.

It was picked from thousands of entries in a competition to find children from Yorkshire to write stories and draw pictures about the heart.

The ten winners were each presented with copies of the book at the ceremony by patron surgeon David O'Regan (pictured).

And this week Rebecca was presented to Leeds United footballers.

Colin Pullan, chairman of Take Heart, and Lynne Preston, fund manager of the Children's Heart Surgery Fund, were delighted with the book and impressed with the quality of the children's work. They hoped the book would raise awareness of heart problems and highlight the work of the two charities. Both organisations support and raise money for children with serious heart diseases.

Helen Sanders of Stories from the Heart said: "They are both fantastic organisations that support and raise funds for children with serious heart diseases.

"They need constant funding."
