Parents whose dangerous parking is endangering pupils at a primary school are facing on-the-spot fines.

Police and traffic wardens will swoop on drivers who park on double yellow lines next to Haworth Primary School entrance and issue £30 fines.

They will also stop drivers who turn their vehicles around in the school entrance after picking up their own children.

Officers have pledged to take similar action outside other schools if alerted by staff or concerned parents.

Earlier this month police and traffic wardens pounced on inconsiderate drivers who were causing problems outside Stanbury Primary School.

Warning letters were last week sent to parents of all Haworth school pupils by community safety officer Sgt Allan Gee (pictured).

He acted after receiving complaints about irresponsible motorists from concerned parents and members of staff.

Some drivers are either parking on double yellow lines next to the school entrance, or turning their vehicles around in the entrance.

Sgt Gee said: "The problem is occurring both mornings and afternoons, caused by persons dropping off or collecting children from school. The practice considerably increases the risk of harm or injury to pedestrians, particularly children as they are entering or leaving school." Sgt Gee said children also faced danger as they tried to cross the road from between illegally-parked vehicles.

He added: "Any person found parking in contravention of the law will be liable to a fixed penalty ticket, which imposes a fine of £30."

Sgt Gee yesterday told the Keighley News that the letter was a "gentle reminder" to the small number of parents who parking inconsiderately.

He said: "Other schools report problems to us with regard to parking, and we do address them.

"We get police and traffic wardens to take a look. If a specific problem is brought to our attention we try to deal with it appropriately."

"These days many parents take their children to school by car and lots of schools do not have adequate parking for a large number of cars."

Parents of Haworth School pupils are allowed to use the private car park on the opposite side of Rawdon Road free of charge.

Parents must have a parking pass, available from the school, which allows a few minutes' free parking each morning and afternoon.

Sgt Gee said: "If those who currently park outside the school on the yellow lines use the car park instead, the road will be much safer place for children."
