Reminiscent of an earlier era, these members and friends of Fell Lane Methodist Chapel celebrated their centenary by re-enacting a traditional 'Whitsuntide walk' on an April Saturday in 1978.

Led by the Salvation Army Band, they stopped to sing hymns in different parts of the district. They are seen here passing the chapel, destined to be closed for worship in 1990 and converted into flats.

Tradition was continued at the end of their walk, when they returned for tea and buns in the Sunday School. Next day their special services were conducted by the Rev W Ivor Calvert, who had been their minister 25 years earlier.

Describing this occasion, the Keighley News of the time poignantly observed how 'older members of the congregation looked back with nostalgia on the more prosperous years of the little chapel's history.' From modest beginnings in a rented cottage in 1872, Fell Lane Methodist Chapel had opened six years later with seating for 250. This centenary would be its last major event.
