Up to 50 cars were attacked and smashed in a spate of wanton vandalism on a Bradford estate early today.

Residents in Swain House woke to find their car windows shattered by the mystery attackers. Two people were spotted getting out of a car and smashing another vehicle on Wrose Avenue.

Police, who estimated between 40 and 50 cars had been damaged, said there was "no known reason" for the vandalism and appealed for witnesses to the attacks.

Resident Deborah Parratt was woken at 3.30am by a telephone phone call from a neighbour saying her car had been damaged.

Two side windows and the back window were smashed in.

"I couldn't believe it," said Mrs Parratt. "I've been quoted £250 and my insurance won't cover it. I've got three children and we rely on the car. I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm gutted.

"It looks like someone has gone on the rampage with a hammer or baseball bat. It's mindless, I can't believe people would be so sick.

"I didn't hear a thing last night until the phonecall. It's normally really quiet round here."

Moorhouse Avenue resident Martin Lamont had two windows in his car smashed.

"I didn't hear anything during the night and woke up to this," he said.

"There are cars all over the place with smashed-in windows. I reckon it covers a distance of well over a mile. Drive down any street round here and you'll see half a dozen cars with wrecked windows.

"It will cost more than £100 to repair and we've only had two windows done. Some cars have had all four windows smashed.

"It's unbelievable. Apart from anything else, it's the inconvenience. You have to take a day off work to sort it out, and you can't go anywhere because your car is smashed up!"

All four windows in Mary Mandreit's car were smashed.

"It looks like someone has driven along just lashing out," she said. "It was a terrible thing to wake up to. This estate is usually peaceful."

A police spokeswoman said officers were called out at about 3.30am.

She said: "One resident reported seeing two people get out of a car and smash up the windows of another vehicle on Wrose Avenue but they couldn't give any descriptions."

She said most of the damage took place in Wrose Avenue, Swain House Crescent, Moorhouse Avenue, Radcliffe Avenue and Greenwood Avenue.

Police appealed for witnesses to contact them on (01274) 376059.
