Arriva Trains conductors have ended their long-running pay dispute - bringing a year of strikes to an end.

The RMT executive has told Arriva Trains Northern that it has reluctantly accepted its offer of a four per cent rise for conductors.

General secretary Bob Crow described it as "totally inadequate" and claimed the Strategic Rail Authority had "effectively bankrolled" the company during the dispute.

"The very idea of a Government agency openly backing an employer in an industrial dispute is disgraceful, but under the circumstances it would be wrong to ask our members to suffer more financial hardship.

"RMT members, their reps and the strike committee have throughout behaved in a principled, dignified and united way, and their example has been an inspiration.

"They have returned to work in the same united and dignified way," said Mr Crow.

Ray Price, managing director of Arriva Trains Northern, welcomed the news.
