A 21-year-old driver, who had been travelling twice the speed limit, died when his car hit a kerb and span into an oncoming vehicle, an inquest heard.

Nathan Freibach, of Foxhill Drive, Queensbury, died from multiple injuries after the crash on the A650 outside Bingley Auction Mart.

Mr Freibach's blue Peugeot car had been overtaking a line of traffic when it turned a corner, clipped a kerb and went out of control for 88 metres before colliding with a Vauxhall Zafira travelling in the opposite direction.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Roger Whittaker called for the introduction of solid white lines on the road to discourage overtaking.

He said Mr Freibach had been travelling at a "totally unsafe and dangerous" speed at the time of the accident.

But he said he would write to the highways authorities calling for speed cameras to be placed at the blackspot after the court heard there had been at least three serious accidents in the area.

"Things could be done to improve the safety of this place,'' he said.

The driver of the Zafira, Linda Pattinson, and her husband Raymond also suffered injuries in the crash in October, but Mrs Pattinson was exonerated from any blame by Mr Whittaker.

Accident investigation officer Anita Blow told the court she estimated the Peugeot had been travelling at around 59 mph when it hit the kerb, on a road with a 30mph speed limit.
