VANDALS have ransacked a children's after-school club, smashing windows, throwing glue and stealing toys.

Thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused to the Otley Out-of-School Club in Bridge Street - in the All Saints Junior School annexe, opposite Otley Police Station.

During Sunday's attack, computers and games were taken, a guitar smashed, glue and eggs were thrown over carpets, and food, including biscuits, was strewn across the floor.

Cath Speight, club organiser, blamed the vandalism on youngsters regularly seen hanging around the building.

"It is disgusting, they have stolen the children's favourite toys," she said. " We have had a lot of windows broken in the past but this weekend they got in and broke our windows.

"They squeezed glue onto our quiet area carpet, stole our videos and games and emptied our fridge. Biscuits, bread and juice were thrown around the playground and they threw the contents of the fridge onto the roof and biscuits all over the floor.

"The cleaner found it like this on Sunday. It was an absolute mess. There was glue everywhere, we have had to board up all the windows.

"We cannot let the children outside to play because the mess is so bad out there. There is glass and beer bottles covering the ground."

The thieves also stole two Nintendo computers, a PlayStation, more than 20 computer games and all the computer handsets. A radio cassette player was smashed and the police found their CD player in a nearby field.

They are concerned that they will not be able to replace all of the equipment because they no longer have receipts for the items and some of the computers were donated.

The group is supposed to be moving to its new premises at the Cross Green Centre in April.

The centre is undergoing a £250,000 revamp.
