A business which set up in Bradford eight years ago has forked out £400,000 on expansion plans which it hopes will more than double turnover.

Pole Position Indoor Karting, which is based on Hockney Road, is set to open a new site in Leeds on February 23.

The firm, which currently employs 14 people, has taken on a further 14 staff members to work at the new site on Sayner Lane and says it may need to employ more as the business develops.

Pole Position, which was set up by former milkman Lyndon Robinson, has invested a total £55,000 on 20 new karts for the venture.

The firm's director Don Midgley hopes the new site will develop as "a leading corporate venue".

He added: "A large percentage of our Bradford market has come from the corporate sector and a wide variety of companies which find it a great team-building and networking exercise.

"We're also using brand new Belgian-designed karts with 270 cc engines and while keen karters will appreciate this power, the layout and quality of the circuit, the more cautious driver will be able to hold a steady line safe in the knowledge that they won't slide out."

The firm, which has around 30,000 people using its track in Bradford each year, has converted a disused 50,000 sq ft building on Sayner Lane for its new premises.

The track, which is more than 500 metres long, features a 130 ft tunnel, a bridge and underpass.

Mr Midgley added: "We hope to attract people from all over the country with this new track. We've been looking for the new site for the last two years, and felt it was perfect as Leeds is a dynamic city. It's central location will also mean it can be used by a wide range of people.

"We don't have any more expansion plans at the moment, as we just want to get this new facility up and running but we may look at growing the firm further and opening a new site in a few years."
