A former bodybuilder has denied to a jury he received or distributed illegal drugs.

Bradford Crown Court heard how Alan Wilby - second in a Mr Britain contest in 1998 - smoked cannabis to help him relax.

The 31-year-old also admitted experimenting with other drugs, but rejected allegations that he was being supplied with cannabis resin and quantities of Ecstasy tablets.

It is claimed by the prosecution that Gary Padgett was recruited as a courier and supplied drugs to him on a number of occasions.

Wilby said that as a doorman he had evicted Padgett from a nightclub more than once after receiving information he was selling drugs.

He said he did not like him, adding it was "common knowledge" Padgett was a drug dealer.

Asked by his barrister Graham Hyland QC whether he had received drugs from Padgett, Wilby replied: "I have not, absolutely not."

Wilby also denied he was involved in distributing drugs. He said that after he broke his leg in a fall, a man would visit him at his home and asked him to test cannabis for him.

Wilby, formerly of Castle Avenue, Rastrick, but now of Illingworth, near Halifax, has pleaded not guilty to two charges of conspiracy to supply drugs. Nigel Sharp, 46, of Common Road, Upper Edge, Elland; Dale Hooson, 40, of Old Lane, Boothtown, Halifax; David Nicholson, 35,of Breck Lea, Beechwood, Sowerby Bridge; his cousin Andrew Nicholson, 33, of Hollins Lane, Mixenden; and Stephen Kelsall, 36, of Peel Street, Wolstanton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, have all denied the conspiracy allegations.

John McGinn, 51, of Huyton, Liverpool, has also pleaded not guilty to the two charges and a series of further charges alleging that he made threats to kill Padgett and his partner Lucy Madge.

The trial continues.
