Otley U-19s 34, Knottingley 0: Otley Academy Under-19s progressed to the quarter-finals of the Yorkshire Cup with a workmanlike performance against Knottingley.

Conditions were sticky after heavy rain and matches the previous day despite which the game was free flowing and not just a forwards tussle.

The start was nervous with some early fumbles from both sides. The Otley pack then showed that they were making ground and skipper Chris Thornton opened the scoring after 12 minutes with a run off the back of the scrum.

Back rower Andy Crawford was on hand for a second ten minutes later. The backs then got in on the act with some strong runs and put winger Tim Rushfirth in for the third try.

Alex Thompson added two difficult conversions as by now the breeze was freshening.

Otley were reduced to 14 players when full-back Kevin Freeman was binned just before half-time and the first 15 minutes of the second-half were more defensive for the home team.

A number of changes were made and the next score was from Steve Maggipinto out on the wing after some slick handling. Hard working Rob Lockrie added the next ten minutes later. The game was capped off by an entertaining handling move involving all the backs when AlexThompson unselfishly flicked the ball to Tom Henry for the final score.

Otley U-19s 29, Keighley 7

Otley booked a place in the semi- finals with this win over Keighley who fielded a big pack who controlled the early play.

The home side soon used the dry conditions to their advantage and began to run ball more effectively and get a grip in mauling situations. The pressure they were able to apply drove prop Ben Fear over in the 14th minute for the first score, the conversion narrowly missing.

The game then went back toward the Otley line, but a turnover released Tim Rushfirth down the wing. His kick ahead was spilled over the line and Tim was on hand to touch down for the second score. Five minutes later the pack drove skipper Chris Thornton over from a line-out to make the half-time score 15-0

After the re-start Keighley came back strongly and Otley defended well on two line assaults. From one of these clearances centre Rob Lockrie scythed through a number of defenders with a jinking run to touch down under the posts for his conversion

Keighley hit back again and were awarded a series of penalties. After a 'not ten' decision their stand-off dived over to score whilst Otley were on the retreat. A touchline conversion took the score to 22-7.

Otley had the final say when winger Kevin Freeman got in on the act in the final minute after a strong run and evaded the Keighley defence. Alex Thompson converted. Tom Hart, playing his last game before departing on gap year travel, had a fine game.

Otley await the outcome of delayed matches to find out their semi-final opponents.
