Cricket: Craig White, playing under the handicap of a side strain during England's World Cup campaign, has had a scan on the injury and will report the outcome to Yorkshire this week.

White made excellent all-round contributions in the first four Ashes Tests before suffering the injury which caused him to miss the latter part of the VB one-day series in Australia.

He recovered sufficiently to play in the World Cup but continued to feel the problem while bowling and the results of the scan will give Yorkshire an indication as to whether White can remain a front-line all-rounder or have to concentrate on his batting.

Yorkshire returned at the weekend from five days at a fitness centre in Cumbria where their more strenuous exercises included running up a mountain and a 23-mile bike ride.

"All the players were exceptionally fit before they went to Cumbria and they have returned even stronger," said director of cricket, Geoff Cope.

The weather was good enough to allow outdoor fielding practices on artificial turf and Cope said the intention was to hold the first outdoor nets of the season at Headingley today and tomorrow.

"The dry spell has helped with our planning and we aim to take every advantage of it," said Cope. "It is not often you can get outdoors in March and if we only manage a couple of days or so it will be time well spent."

Fast bowler Steve Kirby is coming towards the end of an MCC tour to Fiji and will report straight back to Yorkshire when it is over but Test players Michael Vaughan, Matthew Hoggard, Richard Dawson and White will continue to rest up for the time being, Dawson just having returned from the England Academy's tour of Sri Lanka.
