Bradford City fan Garry Stockdill has unearthed the pre-season football programme of the century.

He is the proud owner of the official souvenir and guide to mark the club's entry into the Football League 100 years ago.

This amazing artefact, barely half the size of the modern-day programme, cost just one penny and carries pictures of every member of City's first squad and a full list of fixtures.

An introduction, written under the alias "goalkeeper", carries the gravitas of that era.

It reads: "The Bradford City Football Club will commence operations on the field of play on September 1 when the team will visit Grimsby in connection with the Second Division of the league.

"This match will present the remarkable feat of a club playing the first match of its existence in connection with the Second Division of the premier football league in the country."

There are plenty of adverts, mainly for tailors, overcoats and heavy boots. The front cover even carries details of a local shop for umbrellas and walking sticks.

Mr Stockdill, 44, from Greengates, was given the guide by his grandmother more than 30 years ago. But his memory was jogged by the club's preparations to celebrate its centenary.

He said: "I had kept it safe all that time and I thought this would be the right moment to show it to people.

"It is a fascinating insight in history. I've followed City all my life as have my family.

"We're all big fans of the club and at the moment I've a young nephew who is having a bit of a trial with them."

The guide is likely to feature in a memorabilia exhibition being organised by City to mark their centenary season. It will take place between September 20 and November 16 at the Industrial Museum.

Some of the donated items already promised include an old turnstile, medals from the club's successful seasons, Jonathan Gould's goalkeeper jersey from the 1996 Wembley win and the ball from the 1911 FA Cup final.

City lost 1-0 at Grimsby in their played on a Tuesday afternoon. The following Saturday they were beaten 3-1 by Gainsborough Trinity in their opening home match.

The club claimed a win at the third attempt against Burton United on September 12 and went on to finish tenth.

Mr Stockdill runs his own website www.yorksview.co.uk which is a labour of love dedicated to Yorkshire places, trivia and history.
