An intense blaze in a carpet warehouse was tackled by firefighters early today.

The fire started between the ground floor and the first floor of the two-storey building at the back of Duckworth Lane, Girlington, Bradford.

Fire crews from Fairweather Green and Shipley were called to the scene at about 4.41am and took half an hour to get the blaze under control.

Fairweather Green station Sub-officer Richard Lightowler said: "We had to break in through the door.

"It was a very intense hot fire which was dangerous for the firemen to tackle. They had to fight it from the first floor."

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard a noise and came out early this morning. "There was smoke pouring out from everywhere in the building."

A fire investigation was today underway but it is believed the cause was accidental.

None of the houses nearby were affected by the fire.

Fire crews managed to confine the blaze to the first floor, which limited the damage to stock.

But some wooden furniture and wooden pallets which were on the first floor were burnt.

The building is currently up for sale.
