Two set-piece goals in the first half gave UniBond League Division One title-chasers Spennymoor United a 2-0 victory over hard-working Farsley Celtic in the north-east.

Two free-kicks and two towering headers added up to three points for the home side in another game that was ruined as a spectacle by the bone hard, uneven pitches that are widespread after almost a month of weather more suited to cricket.

The surface led to injuries for leading scorer Michael Midwood, who came off with a recurrence of calf trouble after just ten minutes, and centre back Paul Stevenson, which left the Celts struggling.

The home side took the lead through former Bradford City and Leicester player Nicky Mohan in the ninth minute and sealed the win with a carbon-copy goal just after the half-hour.

"Our keeper Jack Robinson had no saves to make. They are all giants and scored both from set plays," said stunned Celts manager Martin Haresign.

"They were not that big a team when we played them at our place early in the season but they have changed and have real aerial power - they are a constant threat in the air.

"That was made worse because Midwood and Stevenson are two of our bigger players and we lost them both to injury."

It was not a wasted afternoon for the Celts and the two positives were Matt Smithard and Lyle Hillier.

Smithard's ability as a makeshift striker will be needed if Midwood is out for any length of time.

He never stopped working and was on the end of three good opportunities. Hillier came on for the last half-hour and acquitted himself well.

"Lyle was very, very good. The lad is pushing for a shirt and I will have to make a decision on that," said Haresign
