A centenarian who lived in Ilkley for more than 40 years has died only seven months from her 110th birthday.

Olive Oliver was born in Leeds on October 15, 1893 - just three years after the Massacre at Wounded Knee and six years before the beginning of the second Boer War.

Mrs Oliver knew Ilkley well from a young age as her mother had grown up there. After her house in Hull was destroyed in the Blitz, she decided to make Ilkley her home, moving to Bolling Road, Ben Rhydding with her son Richard.

She worked as a postmistress during the war, and then went on to enjoy a happy retirement in the town. She was an active member of the community and enjoyed regular charity work.

After Richard's death in 1988 she moved to Taunton in Somerset, to be with her second son, Tony.

Olive leaves three grandchildren, Ian, Stephen and Judith, six great-grandchildren and her niece Ann Waugh, who lives in Addingham.
